Biology Class
Information
This page you will find general information about Mr. Burton's biology class.
Students need to have a 2 inch three ring binder with dividers that is solely
dedicated to biology class. Students will divide their binders into five sections
and keep the contents in chronological order. The five sections should be
labeled: Handouts, Daily Journal, Class Notes, Labs, Grade Log.
Below I have posted additional class information that can also be found in our
class syllabus. Feel free to click on the syllabus link to access a printable
copy.
Course Goals: To become scientifically literate in biology based on Gwinnett
County's AKS for biology.
Textbook: Biology, published by Prentice Hall (2002). Replacement Cost: All
students are responsible for their textbook and will be required to pay full
replacement cost if it is lost or severely damaged. The replacement cost is
$55.97.
Materials: You will need to bring a pen or pencil to class with your class
notebook and biology text book.
Classroom Expectations: I expect all students to follow Gwinnett and
Norcross High School policies for classroom behavior. In addition, I expect
students to respect the learning environment for their own and other’s benefit.
Lastly, I would expect you, the student, to have fun in class and enjoy learning
about biology.

Course Schedule:
First Semester Course of Study:
Late Work Policy: You are expected to complete and hand in your
assignments on time. Keeping your notebook organized will help
tremendously. You’ll receive two (4) late work passes at the beginning of
each semester that may be used to turn in certain assignments after the due
date; one day late full credit, more than one day 10 points will be deducted for
everyday it is late. No late work will be accepted for a grade without a late
pass. Lost late passes will not be replaced. Teacher discretion will apply in
any special circumstances..
Grade Scale and Percentages:
A = 100 – 90
B = 89 – 80
C = 79 – 74
D = 73 – 70
U = 69 - 0
Classwork/Homework: 10%
Labs: 25%
Quizzes/Mini Assessments: 10%
Tests/projects: 35%
EOCT: 20%
Make up Work: Make-up work is only available for excused absences. Per
NHS policy, students must present a valid excuse within 2 days of their return
to class in order to receive make-up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S
RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT WORK NEEDS TO BE MADE UP.
Students will typically have 5 days to complete the work missed for each
excused absence. Major tests, quizzes, and labs that take more time can be
scheduled on an individual basis, but must be made up BEFORE or AFTER
school within one week from returning to school. In the case of prolonged
absences of three or more days, please come and speak with me before or
after school to work out a schedule for completing missing assignments.
Failure to complete missed work will result in a zero for the assignment and
WILL negatively affect your overall semester average.
Cheating of any sort, including plagiarism, will not be tolerated and will likely
result in a zero for the assignment and possibly a referral to an administrator.
The NHS Academic Integrity Policy will be enforced.
All papers must have your name, date, and period in the upper right corner.
